Iveco Daily engine oil (1999–2025): a comprehensive guide to choosing the right one

The Iveco Daily is an iconic commercial vehicle that has undergone more than two decades of technical evolution, from the Euro 3 standard to the stringent Euro 6 standard. This remarkable longevity is largely down to a factor that is often overlooked but essential: the quality of the engine oil used. Between the various generations of engines, increasing environmental requirements, and the diversity of uses (light commercial vehicles, heavy haulage, natural gas, etc.), choosing the right oil is crucial to maintaining the vehicle’s performance and reliability.

In this comprehensive guide, we will review all the key points you need to know: which oils for which engines, which standards to comply with, which products are approved, which oil change intervals to follow, and what pitfalls to avoid to ensure optimal lubrication of your Iveco Daily’s engine.

Recommended oils by generation: from Euro 3 to Euro 6

  • Daily III (1999–2006) – Euro 3 standard

The 2.8 L Sofim engines of this generation have neither a particulate filter nor a catalytic converter, which allows the use of conventional oils with a high SAPS content (an acronym for Sulphated Ash, Phosphorus and Sulphur) such as 15W-40 or 10W-40 mineral or semi-synthetic oils. Products such as 15W-40 or 10W-40 are robust choices.

  • Daily IV (2006–2011) – Euro 4 standard

With the introduction of the 2.3 L F1A and the 3.0 L F1C, the recommended oil is a 5W-40 synthetic. Oils such as 5W-40 are perfectly suited to these engines, which are direct-injection but do not have a diesel particulate filter (DPF).

  • Daily V (2011–2014) – Euro 5 standard with DPF

This marks the transition to Low SAPS (low sulphate, phosphorus and sulphur content). DPF engines require a 5W-30 oil.

  • Daily VI (2014–2019) – Euro 6 (SCR + DPF)

Oils are evolving towards Fuel Economy formulations with 0W-30 or 5W-30 viscosity, approved by Iveco LV. The aim is to reduce fuel consumption without compromising lubrication.

  • Daily VII (2019–2025) – Euro 6d standard

The Euro 6d engine requires a high-performance, low-viscosity oil, specifically 0W-30. These oils meet the latest requirements for DPF regeneration and compatibility.

NB: For chain-driven engines (3.0 F1C), it is essential to use a premium-grade oil and never exceed the recommended service intervals, as this may damage the hydraulic tensioner.

Technical standards to be met: ACEA, API and manufacturer approvals

An oil must explicitly display its approval on its label to be used safely. If in doubt, opt for trusted brands with long-standing partnerships with Iveco.

Maintenance and oil change intervals depending on usage

  • Normal use (motorway): up to 40,000–50,000 km or 2 years for long-life synthetic oils.
  • Heavy-duty use (urban, deliveries, mountainous terrain): interval reduced to 20,000–25,000 km, or even less depending on conditions.
  • CNG engine: max 40,000 km with T2 oil; be aware of faster acidification.

?️ Tip: Check the oil every 5,000 km, and above all, do not mix incompatible oils (e.g. High SAPS with Low SAPS).

Specific points to watch out for

  • Particulate filters (FAP): never use oil that is not Low SAPS in an Iveco Daily Euro 5 or later engine, as this risks clogging the FAP.
  • Timing chain (3.0 F1C): oil quality is essential for durability.
  • Mixing oils: avoid mixing oils with different specifications (B4 vs C2/C3).
  • Climate: adjust the viscosity to the ambient temperature. Use 0W/5W for cold climates.

Choosing the right engine oil for your Iveco Daily is key to the vehicle’s longevity. Never take this decision lightly: adhere to the engine’s Euro standard, choose an approved oil, adjust oil change intervals to suit usage, and check the level regularly.
