HI-Matic gearbox for the Iveco Daily: everything you need to know about this transmission

The Iveco Daily’s HI-Matic gearbox is much more than just a transmission system: it is a key component that transforms the driving experience, optimises performance and offers exemplary reliability, even under the most demanding operating conditions. This 8-speed automatic gearbox is a first in the light commercial vehicle segment and has now become the standard for many professionals.

Technical overview of the HI-Matic: high-performance transmission

The HI-Matic is based on the architecture of one of the best hydraulic torque converter automatic transmissions on the market. This gearbox features 8 forward gears and 1 reverse gear, controlled by an intelligent ECU capable of selecting the ideal gear based on over 20 parameters (load, gradient, driving style, etc.). Thanks to its lock-up torque converter, it ensures a smooth start-off whilst eliminating slip as soon as possible to improve fuel efficiency.

In addition to an extremely well-designed gear ratio, the HI-Matic ensures the engine is always running at the optimum speed. When loaded, it adapts its gear changes to the situation to avoid over-revving or unnecessary strain. When unladen, it often starts directly in second gear, which improves smoothness.

Two driving modes are available:

  • Eco: for reduced fuel consumption and earlier gear changes,
  • Power: for increased performance, with rapid gear changes (≈0.2 s) and higher engine speeds.

Advantages of the HI-Matic over the Iveco Daily

Driving comfort

The HI-Matic offers unrivalled comfort in a commercial vehicle. With no clutch pedal, gear changes are smooth and silent. In urban areas, where frequent stops and starts are common, driver fatigue is significantly reduced.

Performance and flexibility

The 8-speed gearbox ensures sharp acceleration, better pick-up (around 10% improvement compared to the manual gearbox), and remarkable hill-climbing ability, even when fully loaded. The ‘kick-down’ function provides impressive responsiveness, particularly useful for overtaking.

Fuel consumption and efficiency

Unlike some automatic gearboxes of the past, the HI-Matic reduces fuel consumption, notably thanks to its Eco mode. On a Daily 2.3 L, average fuel consumption is 10–11 L/100 km, optimised by gear changes at low revs and a long final drive ratio.

Reduced maintenance

An oil change every 200,000 km is sufficient. The absence of manual operation also reduces the risk of breakdowns due to misuse (over- or under-revving, incorrect downshifting, etc.).

Iveco models compatible with the HI-Matic gearbox

Since its launch on the 3rd generation Daily in 2015, the HI-Matic gearbox has been available across almost the entire range:

  • 3.3 to 3.5 t panel vans,
  • Chassis cabs up to 7.2 t (70C21, 50C18 versions, etc.),
  • Gas (CNG) versions: Daily Natural Power Hi-Matic,
  • Certain Daily 4x4 versions (latest generations only).

It is compatible with:

  • 2.3 L engines (116 to 156 hp),
  • 3.0 L engines (150 to 210 hp),
  • 3.0 L engine (136 hp).

The Daily HI-Matic even won the Van of the Year 2018 award in its LPG version for its combination of quietness and smooth driving.

Feedback on reliability and usage

Positive feedback

Both professionals and private users unanimously praise the HI-Matic’s flexibility and robustness. Many fleet managers report vehicles having covered over 600,000 km without any gearbox issues, provided they are properly maintained. On the motorway, drivers appreciate the low, constant engine speed. In town, driving becomes almost instinctive and relaxing.

Points to note

An isolated fault on 2015–2017 models (torque converter drive plate) has been rectified via a recall. A few rare cases of faulty sensors or oil leaks have been reported, but nothing structural.

Cost and maintenance: long-term savings

  • Routine maintenance: a gearbox oil change every 200,000 km.
  • Fuel consumption: optimised thanks to the 8-speed gearbox, with a reduction of up to 10% depending on the cycle.
  • Rare repairs: replacement of the torque converter or mechatronics may be required after 500,000 km.

The HI-Matic gearbox offers a service life equivalent to, or even exceeding, that of the vehicle. It is therefore a worthwhile investment for professionals seeking reliability, comfort and longevity.
